Your date of birth points to one or two Major Arcana cards, which tarot readers call your birth cards.
Tarot birth card calculator
What are my tarot birth cards?
Add your birth month, day and full year, then add the digits of the total until you reach 22 or less. That number is your Personality card, and its digits added together give your Soul card. With JavaScript on, the calculator does the sum and shows your cards.
The nine card families, called constellations, are listed just below.
How the birth card calculation works
- Add the month, the day and the full year as numbers. For July 6, 1907: 7 + 6 + 1907 = 1920.
- Add the digits of the total: 1 + 9 + 2 + 0 = 12. If the result is over 22, add its digits again.
- A result from 10 to 22 is your Personality card, and its digits added give your Soul card: 12 is the Hanged Man, and 1 + 2 = 3 is the Empress.
- A single-digit result is one card that plays both roles.
- Two results are special. A 19 gives three cards: the Sun, the Magician and, between them, Wheel of Fortune as a teacher card. A 22 is The Fool, paired with the Emperor.
This is the method Mary K. Greer set out in Tarot Constellations (1987) and Who Are You in the Tarot?, building on Angeles Arrien's work. Some teachers, including the Tarot School, add the date in a slightly different way and always give a pair, so their higher card can differ; the Soul card comes out the same either way.
The nine tarot constellations
Every Major Arcana card belongs to a family that shares one root number. Your Soul card names your family, and any family members your date did not produce are your hidden factor.
- 1: The Magician (1), Wheel of Fortune (10), The Sun (19)
- 2: The High Priestess (2), Justice (11), Judgement (20)
- 3: The Empress (3), The Hanged Man (12), The World (21)
- 4: The Emperor (4), Death (13), The Fool (22)
- 5: The Hierophant (5), Temperance (14)
- 6: The Lovers (6), The Devil (15)
- 7: The Chariot (7), The Tower (16)
- 8: Strength (8), The Star (17)
- 9: The Hermit (9), The Moon (18)
The numbering follows the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, with Strength as 8 and Justice as 11.
Your year card
The year card uses your birth month and day with the current year: for August 26, 2012, 8 + 26 + 2012 = 2046, and 2 + 0 + 4 + 6 = 12, the Hanged Man. It is a single card and is not reduced again. Greer reads it both as a calendar year and from one birthday to the next. For the sky on the day you were born, the birthday moon phase calculator shows your birth moon.
